Blood Meal

We often get questions concerning the blood meal that is used in our products. Why do we use it? Is it safe? Is it ethical?

Blood meal is a by-product of the slaughter of meat animals. It is processed by dribbling blood between counter rotating stainless steel rollers which are heated to 800 degrees F. The hot rollers instantly dehydrate the blood and crumble the dry solids into meal. The very high temperature treatment sterilizes the material. While many of us are uncomfortable with the treatment of meat animals from which the blood comes, we can think if no more respectful use of that blood than to support the growth of healthy plants.

Blood is a unique protein. It has the capability to remain present in insoluable forms and then devolve completely into plant-available forms without becoming toxic to plants. Many other proteins have phases in their breakdown where they become toxic to plants. We have experimented with most alternative sources of protein and still feel that blood is superior for plant growth.
