Best Practices
Not intended for use as a complete growing media—use as an amendment to existing soil. Can be usefully recommended for use as up to half of the growing media. We do not recommend growing in pure compost because of its above neutral pH and mechanical characteristics.
Prep for use: None—use as is. Since nutrients are not readily available and mostly insoluble, incorporation for spring planting should be done in the previous fall to assure adequate available soluble nutrients. If crowded for time use Compost Plus as a further amendment at planting time.
Handling: Do not let the product over dry or get waterlogged. Store under cover, out of direct sunlight. Protect from weed seeds and animals.
Supplemental Fertility: Yearly incorporation of compost will meet fertility needs for sustained production. Depending on soil origin and history.
Storage and Shelf Life: Bulk product should be used within 12 months from purchase to avoid the possibility of altering the composition of the humus and leaching fertility. Bagged product must not get too wet nor dry as either will degrade the product from its original potency and vitality.
