As the compost turns

suicidal obsession?

July 12, 2008

in the food insecure, grain short world of now, a community that allows a farm operation that produces eggs without buying grain, that produces composts and potting soils, manages pastures, and now hosts a new market garden to be “cease and desisted”, is the victim of a suicidal obsession with definitions in law without respect to whole bio-systems. we are in an emergency about food self sufficiency folks. we need more chickens and more compost and more crops and more people working on the land

My own business Dirt Works, is under attack from my local government this year even though we have been operating our business here for ten years and we move to a property zoned commercial to accommodate our growing needs for more space and demand from the public for what we do. The argument against us is specious as is the ones now being used against the Intervale Compost Company and Vermont Compost.
We were previously, without complaint from anyone - anywhere, operating on a residential piece just down the street so I took a huge risk and bought a new place with commercial zoning on 5 times as much land with a solar underground, energy efficient house on the property and at great expense moved everything here. Within 4 days of arriving and before we even had everything put away or unloaded the zoning commissioner showed up to inform me, while I was working, that we couldn’t be here doing this without a permit. He also informed me that when I apply for the permit their process would be to automatically reject every application and then i would be forced to appeal this to this courts.

I see all of these actions as a conspiracy against newer, progressive businesses that by their very nature threaten the status quo. The new tactic is not unlike the the latest FISA lawn which take authority away from the courts, where the Republicans know they have no chance and delivering authority to lower grade managers and cabinet heads.
Using tribal rights to shut down Intervale in Vermont is Bullshit. the government of the state of Vermont has never cared one wit about the the Abnaki. they he;d their tribal drum and relics in the basement of the state house up until about ten years ago with no reason. the deny them recognition as a tribe yet when it serves their purposes they pretend to care so much they threaten to shut down one of Vermont’s most important resources for agriculture in the Intervale.
Vermont Compost has been helping to educate and recycle resources that would otherwise pollute this state for over a decade. Shutting them down and forcing them to pay agregious fines to put them under will lead to more pollution and midnight dumping and expensive tipping fees to cover the cost of trucking a valuable resource from our own waste stream out of state and possibly out of the country only to be thrown away in a landfill or shipped backed to us at a high carbon cost as a finished product we used to manufacture ourselves out of what was previously considered waste.

This has to stop. The old guard is trying to pull us back into the swamp of ideas they have lived in and profited from for too long now. We can no longer let them have their way and destroy this beautiful planet for their own greedy purposes.
Resist in any way you can. Buy Vermont compost and Intervale compost and support your local, progressive farmers by buying what they have to sell. Write your state and federal reps and never give in. Never give in or up. Resistance is not futile!

Karl - please send me the original day one with the cease and desist business - I seem to be getting only day two. O, how fast things move.
