Manure Compost

Living Soil Amendment

This compost blend is the basis of all the soil mixes we make. Raw materials are assembled in windrows, monitored for temperature and air supply, and turned as needed. Like all our products, manure compost is tested for maturity and is free of live weed seed. Manure Compost is screened on a 7/8" trommel to ensure a consistent, refined product. Please visit Our Compost Process for more information.

Carefully crafted for field and greenhouse applications, manure compost increases organic matter, soil tilth, and nutrition. Manure compost is a great choice for organic growers looking to improve soil health for the long-term success of their farm.

Manure compost can be applied in the fall or as an amendment prior to seeding and transplant. Most growers will find that an application of 1 to 2 inches provides significant improvement to soil texture and water handling. Manure compost can also be used to create compost tea.

All ingredients used in Manure Compost have been approved for certified organic production. Vermont Compost Company’s composting process meets the National Organic Program (NOP) standard requirements and their products are approved by Vermont Organic Farmers (VOF), the certification branch of NOFA-VT. Best Practices

Use as an amendment to existing soil. Due to pH levels and mechanical characteristics, Manure Compost is not intended for use as a complete growing media.

Prep For Use

Use as-is or mix with warm water to create a compost tea.

Handling

Avoid drastic changes in moisture/saturation. Store undercover, out of direct sunlight. Protect from weed seed, petroleum products, and other contaminants.

Supplemental Fertility

Regular incorporation of compost during the fall and/or spring will generally meet fertility needs for sustained production. Application specifics depend on existing fertility, soil condition, and crop rotations. Manure Compost can be mixed up to 50/50 with your existing media.

Storage and Shelf Life

Store in a neutral environment which encourages moisture retention and protects from UV light. For optimal performance of living soil, we suggest using it within 6-9 months from the date of purchase, although it may perform adequately for up to 12 months. For more detailed information, please refer to our article on storage and handling.

“For years Gaining Ground has spread hundreds of yards of Vermont Compost's manure compost. We believe it has been a huge contributor to the health of our soil, our ecosystem, and to the health of all the people who enjoy our vegetables.  I always tell our staff and volunteers that it is the Cadillac of compost!”
